Dental and Vision Add-Ons for ACA Marketplace Plans in Florida
Many Floridians assume an ACA health plan automatically includes full dental and vision benefits. It does not, at least not for adults. Understanding what is built in, what is optional, and how add-on plans are purchased can save you from a surprise at the dentist or the eye doctor. Here is how it works for 2027 coverage.
What the ACA Requires: Children vs. Adults
The difference between children and adults is the most important thing to know. According to HealthCare.gov, the 10 essential health benefits include pediatric services, including oral and vision care, but adult dental and vision coverage are not essential health benefits.
| Benefit | Children (18 and Under) | Adults |
|---|---|---|
| Dental | Essential health benefit; must be available inside a health plan or as a separate dental plan | Not required; plans are not required to offer it |
| Vision | All Marketplace plans include vision coverage for children | Only some plans include it |
How Dental Add-Ons Work
HealthCare.gov explains that in the Marketplace you can pick a health plan with or without dental benefits. Key points to keep in mind:
- Embedded dental: Some health plans include dental, and the premium covers both health and dental benefits.
- Separate dental plans: These carry their own premium on top of your health plan premium.
- Bought together: You cannot buy a Marketplace dental plan unless you are buying a health plan at the same time.
- Waiting periods: Separate dental plans can have waiting periods before they cover services for adults. Premiums are still due during that time, so ask the insurer about waiting periods before you enroll.
- Flexibility: You can cancel a separate dental plan at any time, but you cannot remove dental coverage from a health plan that includes it.
How Vision Add-Ons Work
Vision follows a different path. The HealthCare.gov glossary notes that if your plan does not include adult vision coverage, you can buy a stand-alone vision plan, but the Marketplace does not offer stand-alone vision plans. To shop for one, you contact an insurance agent or broker, search online, or reach out to your state’s Department of Insurance.
Questions to Ask Before You Add Dental or Vision
- What is the annual maximum the plan will pay, and does it cover the services you actually use?
- Are there waiting periods for fillings, crowns, or other major work?
- Is your dentist or eye doctor in the plan’s network?
- Does the extra premium make sense compared with paying out of pocket for routine care?
When You Can Add or Change Coverage
You can change health plans during Open Enrollment, which runs November 1 through January 15 each year, or outside that window if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. For the 2027 plan year, enroll by December 15, 2026 for coverage starting January 1, or by January 15, 2027 for coverage starting February 1, per HealthCare.gov.
